Dear EFS students,

We have come to the end of the course and I hope you have improved in all or some areas. Please continue with your hard work which will help you to achieve your goals. I know there have been some ups and downs during the learning period but that has made our course a bit more interesting and realistic. It has been my pleasure to teach you and I wish you the very best in pursuing your career.

Depression


Depression is a serious medical illness. It's more than just a feeling of being sad or "blue" for a few days. Depression is a disorder of the brain. There are a variety of causes, including genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Depression can happen at any age, but it often begins in teens and young adults. It is much more common in women. 
People affected by this illness have the symptoms such as persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood, feelings of hopelessness or pessimism, loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies or activities, decreased energy, fatigue, or being “slowed down”, difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions, difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping, appetite and/or weight changes, thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts, aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause etc.
The first step in getting the right treatment is to visit a health care provider or mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. Your health care provider can do an exam, interview, and lab tests to rule out other health conditions that may have the same symptoms as depression. Once diagnosed, depression can be treated with medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. If these treatments do not reduce symptoms, brain stimulation therapy may be another treatment option to explore.

ENCYCLOPEADIA - TEXT TYPE

An encyclopedia or encyclopaedia is a reference work or compendium providing summaries of information from either all branches of knowledge or from a particular field or discipline. Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries that are often arranged alphabetically by article name and sometimes by thematic categories. Encyclopedia entries are longer and more detailed than those in most dictionaries.
Encyclopedias have existed for around 2,000 years and have evolved considerably as a valued source of reliable information compiled by experts, printed versions found a prominent place in libraries, schools and other educational institutions.
The appearance of digital and open-source versions in the 20th century has vastly expanded the accessibility, authorship, readership, and variety of encyclopedia entries and called into question the idea of what an encyclopedia is and the relevance of applying to such dynamic productions the traditional criteria for assembling and evaluating print encyclopedias.

and get familiar with the website.
Choose one health issue and go 
through the headings
Write a very brief summary 
about what the disease is,
symptoms and other headings
in the report online

Newspaper Reports

During the holidays you need to collect news clippings about current issues and the most useful sources are The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph. Current concerns are usually, immediately covered by the press and it will mean you become familiar with some of the local and macro environment. 
Activity 1Take some notes using key words after reading the article you have chosen.

Activity 2  - Write a brief summary of the main issues the article deals with based on your notes.
Activity 3  - Respond in a written format about attitudes, feelings, reflections on the content and implications of the article.

First day back - Bring a newspaper article to class (with no notes or a summary)
